Here we go!

For my first blog entry, I’m excited to share the press release that was sent out today announcing the launch of Erik Martella Wines! The seeds for this project were first planted in 2021 when Grandfather Vineyard and Winery in Banner Elk, North Carolina agreed to let me utilize some space in their facility to experiment with two grapes I’d never worked with before: Carlos (a Muscadine Variety) and Vidal Blanc (a Modern (hybrid) Variety). I acquired about one ton of each and fermented them separately, then blended them together and performed a Charmat-style secondary fermentation in a brewing tank Grandfather Winery had in their cellar. The resulting sparkling wine was an amazing combination of fruit from the Carlos and structure from the Vidal Blanc that has gained in nuance and complexity with age. This became the 2021 CVB Sparkling and inspired my continued work with Muscadine varieties at Windsor Run Cellars, which lead to the concept for Erik Martella Wines as a home for muscadine wines made with luxury winemaking techniques. Now, three years later, I have six wines available in the online store, and another two in bottles awaiting their autumn 2024 release. All eight wines were presented at an amazing launch dinner just over a week ago!

Below are a couple pictures from the dinner, and below them is the press release.

Thanks for stopping by!

Elkin, NC - August 6, 2024 – Erik Martella, a distinguished figure in the world of winemaking with over 20 years of experience with some of California's most recognizable wine brands, launched his boutique label, Erik Martella Wines, during an extraordinary wine dinner event at The Wisdom Table in Elkin, NC. This event marked a significant milestone in Erik's mission to create a uniquely American fine wine experience centered around wines made from muscadine grapes native to the southeast.

The evening featured six courses, each based on traditional southern dishes interpreted through the culinary artistry of Executive Chef Tim Thompson and curated by Certified Sommelier Jeremy Stamps. Guests, including prominent supporters of North Carolina wine such as Brianna Burns from the NC Wine Growers Association, and media members Arthur Barham (Merlot2Muscadine), Joe Brock & Matt Kemberling (NC Wine Guys), and Kara Daly (Wine is Confusing), witnessed firsthand the versatility of the muscadine grape.

Erik Martella shared the rich history of muscadine grapes in the U.S. and highlighted his dedication to exploring their untapped potential. His commitment to innovation and quality was evident throughout the evening as guests tasted eight unique wines in diverse styles ranging from sparkling to carbonic maceration to barrel-aged seed-contact. During the tasting he provided a deep understanding of how different winemaking techniques can influence the expression of the grape, showcasing the distinctive aroma, flavor, and finish of muscadine fine wines.

"Our goal is to add a new narrative for muscadine wine, one that positions it as a fine wine with a uniquely American heritage," said Erik Martella. "Through meticulous craftsmanship and a passion for innovation, we aim to highlight the extraordinary qualities of the muscadine grape and share its story with wine enthusiasts around the world."
